Two new reference laboratories have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the testing of samples supplied by MOEHS Cantabria. The collaboration has great value, given that there are very few laboratories in Spain with this certification due to the exhaustive controls required by the FDA.
Since 2010, MOEHS maintains a close collaboration with the Materials Characterization Service (SERCAMAT), integrated into the Scientific-Technical Research Services of the University of Cantabria, and the SOSPROCAN unit, the two laboratories that receive new certification.
First, the X-ray diffraction laboratory of the Matter Magnetism Group, Department of Earth Sciences and Condensed Matter Physics (CITIMAC), has recently launched a LYNXEYE rapid detector on the diffractometer, financed by FEDER and UC funds. The X-ray diffractometer is used to implement numerous resources in different national and European research projects, to do doctoral theses as well as to offer training to researchers, which has been a remarkable aspect for approval.
Secondly, the Analytical Services of the SOSPROCAN unit of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of the University of Cantabria (UC), which develops specific methodologies for the analysis of active ingredients of interest for MOEHS, by means of ICP-MASS and Chromatography of gases with mass detector (GC-MS), which has allowed to reach the quality standards demanded by the FDA.
Thanks to this, previous tests and trials have been successfully developed, and now the new tests are being carried out with the support that the laboratories of the University of Cantabria require, having obtained the demanding certification from the FDA.
The process has been coordinated by Noelia Fernández, Mariví Barranco and Jordi Valls, responsible for quality of Moehs. The technical director of SERCAMAT, David Hernández, along with Raquel Ibáñez and Elena Manteca, has also collaborated on behalf of the University of Cantabria, as director and quality manager of the Analytical Services of the SOSPROCAN unit.
